The Nigerian female U-20 football team came out on top in a match with their Spanish counterparts at the PNG Football Stadium, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The Falconets’ hope to earn a top or second spot in the group were shattered as the match between fellow Group B members Canada and Japan ended 5-0 in the latter’s favour.

Nigeria continued with their momentum after beating Canada 3-1. The Falconets equalised five minutes after Alba Redondo scored for Spain in the 7th minute.

18-year-old Ihuoma Onyebuchi scored after finding enough space and time to fire in a nodded ball from Charity Reubenafter a corner kick.

Nigeria pushed forwards in the closing moments of the opening half, but were made to wait for their second goal, which came after the interval.

The Falconets led after No.9, Chinwendu Ihezuo, scored in the 72nd minute.

Ihezuo received a long pass from Rasheedat Abijade and then nodded the ball past the Spanish defenders, sprinted into space, before firing home a left-footed effort.

Nigeria played the final six minutes with ten players, after Glory Ogbonnapicked up a second booking.

The win wasn’t enough as Nigeria came third due to a poor goal difference, no thanks to the 6-0trashing in the hands of Japan, who earned top spot in the group. Spain came second, while Canada who lost all their games were bottom.
